Smoke Alarm Installation, Compliance and Upgrades - we're the experts
Smoke Alarm Installation On Sunshine Coast
We not only do smoke alarm installation, but we also make sure they’re compliant with all the latest safety regulations.
Smoke alarm installation is required by law throughout Queensland, and for good reason – they help save lives. But upgrading your smoke alarms can be a daunting task. That’s where we come in – we’ll take care of everything for you so you’re compliant and safe.
Importance of Smoke Alarms
Smoke alarms are an important part of any home fire safety plan. A working smoke alarm can mean the difference between life and death in a fire. That’s why it’s important to have working smoke alarms in your home and to test them regularly.
It is generally recommended that smoke alarms be installed in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home. Smoke alarms should also be interconnected so that when one alarm goes off, they all go off, giving everyone extra time to escape.
In addition to installing smoke alarms, it’s also important to ensure that they are properly maintained. This means testing them monthly and replacing the batteries at least once a year.
New Queensland Smoke Alarm Legislation Timeline
New smoke alarm legislation in Queensland means smoke alarms must be installed in every bedroom and hallway of residential dwellings. All homes must be installed with interconnecting photoelectric smoke alarms.
A photoelectric smoke alarm responds to a variety of fires and are especially responsive to smouldering fires and dense smoke – the most common type of household fires. Multi-level dwellings will require an alarm on each level of the dwelling irrespective of if there is a bedroom or not.
(H$4) To comply smoke alarms in all dwellings must be:
- Photoelectric
- Less than 10 years old
- Operate when tested
- Not containing an ionisation sensor
- Interconnecting with every other smoke alarm in the dwelling
- Either be hardwired or powered by a non-removable 10 year battery
(H$4) Smoke alarms must be installed on all levels and in:
- Each bedroom, and
- Hallways that connect bedrooms and the rest of the dwelling,
- If there is no hallway, smoke detectors must be installed between the bedrooms and other parts of the storey,
- If there are no bedrooms on a level, at least one smoke alarm must be installed in the travel path most likely used to exit the dwelling.
The date by which you need to comply changes depending on:
New builds – 1 January 2017 all new builds must meet the requirements
Sold or leased – 1 January 2022 all dwellings sold or leased as well as Government owned housing must comply.
Home owners – 1 January 2027 all residential dwellings must comply and every level of a residential dwelling must have at least one smoke alarm.
What Kind of Smoke Alarm Installation Do you Need?
When it comes to smoke alarms, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. The type of smoke alarm you need depends on your specific needs. Smoke alarms come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and prices, so it’s important to do your research before making a purchase.
The best smoke alarms are those that fit your specific needs and budget. For instance, if you’re looking for a smoke alarm that will be installed permanently in your home, you’ll need to consider the cost of installation.
Smoke alarms also come in different styles, such as those with or without a night light. Ultimately, the best smoke alarm for you is the one that meets your specific needs, budget and complies with the legisation.
While smoke alarms are required by law in all Australian states and territories, the rules around installation and compliance can vary from state to state. At Flex Electrical Qld, we continuously update our smoke alarm testing and installation to adhere to all current state and national legislative requirements.
We prioritise your safety and health above all else.
